Learn Serbian Phrases with Beogradski Sindikat 1

I guess it is just the perfect time to learn a bunch of commonly used phrases and collocations in Serbian with a newly released song "Sistem te laže" by Beogradski sindikat.

I created a new kind of exercise, with dropdown suggested answers, so you don't need to write while listening to the song, but simply click on the option you hear. You can also try to do the exercise before listening to the song, in order to guess what's missing.

Make sure you listen to the song once again, following the same lyrics in the Cyrillic script!

Working with song lyrics as a language source

Songs are useful for collocations because melody preserves groups of words as a single memory unit. Listen once for the general message, a second time for the missing phrase, and a third time while reading the complete line. After checking an answer, reuse the expression in a neutral sentence of your own so that it becomes active vocabulary.

Song lyrics are compressed and often idiomatic, which makes them harder than dialogue but much more memorable. Sistem te laže is three words carrying a whole argument. Take the lines slowly, one at a time, and do not worry about following the song at speed until you know what each line means on its own.

Lines and phrases in Latin and Cyrillic

Latin scriptCyrillic scriptEnglish
Sistem te laže.Систем те лаже.The system is lying to you.
Ne verujem praznim obećanjima.Не верујем празним обећањима.I do not believe empty promises.
Istina izlazi na videlo.Истина излази на видело.The truth comes to light.
Ljudi traže svoja prava.Људи траже своја права.People are demanding their rights.
Moramo da mislimo svojom glavom.Морамо да мислимо својом главом.We must think for ourselves.

Serbian hip-hop is written in both alphabets depending on the release, so it is worth being comfortable with either. Read each line in Cyrillic and notice how the rhythm of the words looks on the page — the syllable count that makes the rhyme work is easier to see when you are not reading on autopilot.

Listening and shadowing

Play the song and follow the written lines with your finger, no speaking. On the second pass, speak along quietly, half a beat behind. On the third, try to keep up out loud. Shadowing music trains rhythm and vowel length in a way that slow reading never will.
