The Passive Voice in Serbian - Verb Forms

Let me give you some examples of the Passive Voice in Serbian, and then you can have fun practicing with a few Quizlet exercises!

Zgrada je sagrađena prošle godine - the building was built last year
Rata je uplaćena - the installment was paid
Nove kancelarije su otvorene pre dva dana - the new offices were opened two days ago

OSNOVAN - OSNOVATI (TO ESTABLISH)
SMEŠTEN - SMESTITI (TO PLACE/LOCATE/SITUATE)
SAGRAĐEN - SAGRADITI (TO BUILD PERF.)
ZAVRŠEN - ZAVRŠITI (TO FINISH)

Unfortunately, there haven't been many posts about the Passive Voice on this blog. I want this to change and that's why I would like to add a few more exercises about this topic. Based on the following fun song which has great lyrics about Rakija production, I'll make a few exercises for you.

Passive Participle Verb Forms

The Passive Voice in Serbian is not that hard, but the main problem is the verb form called "trpni glagolski pridev", or passive participle in English. Although I have already written about it, it can be useful to mention how to form it:

*VERB STEM + -N/-NA/-NO // -NI/-NE/-NA

Example: NAPISA+TI --- napisaN, napisaNA, napisaNO // napisaNI, napisaNE, napisaNA (to write --- written)

*VERB STEM + -N/-NA/-NO // -NI/-NE/-NA

Example: NAPISA+TI --- napisaN, napisaNA, napisaNO // napisaNI, napisaNE, napisaNA (to write --- written)

*VERB STEM + -T/-TA/-TO // -TI/-TE/-TA

Example: PRODA+TI --- prodaT, prodaTA, prodaTO // prodaTI, prodaTE, prodaTA (to sell --- sold)

*VOICE CHANGES: in some cases with the verb stem ending in -e or -i:

NOSITI - NOŠEN
VIDETI - VIĐEN
RANITI - RANJEN

*ADDING an infix - V or -J between the stem and the passive suffix:

OBUTI - OBUVEN
ČUTI - ČUVEN
UBITI - UBIJEN
ISPITI - ISPIJEN

You'll be able to practise the passive participle verb forms with the following exercises which are based on the verbs in the first four minutes of the video:

Listen to this interesting story about Filip Vukša, a modest Belgrade hero, and try to do the following exercises dedicated to the verb forms in active and passive voice in Serbian.

a. Exercise 1 - filling in the gaps with the appropriate verb form in active voice.
b. Exercise 2 - turning the verbs which were in the active voice from into passive voice.

Now that you've learnt the introductory song by heart (napamet), you are ready for more examples with the word order of the sentences with reflexive or impersonal "se". This time I'll cover the word order in the Simple Present tense with all three forms, affirmative, negative and questions. So, let's start :

Reflexive -se: oblačiti se (to get dressed) Present tense of OBLAČITI SE is :

Affirmative sentences : Subject (S) + predicate (P)

Oblačim se. N
Ja se oblačim.
Ti se igraš, a ja se oblačim. N
Sedi i gledaj TV dok se ja oblačim. N
Komšije su videle kako se (ja) oblačim u kuhinji. N
Priznajem da se oblačim u kuhinji. N

Negations: Subject (S) + NE + predicate (P)

Ne oblačim se. N
Ja se ne oblačim.
Ti se ne igraš, a ja se ne oblačim. N
Sedi i gledaj TV dok se ja ne oblačem. N
Tvrdila sam da se ne oblačim u kuhinji. N
Priznajem da se ne oblačim u kuhinji. N

Questions: Subject (S) + predicate (P)

Da li se oblačiš ? N
Da li se ti oblačiš ?
Oblačiš li se ?
Jel' se oblačiš ? N
Kada se oblačiš ? N
Kada se ti oblačiš ? N

S + P + AoT(adverb of time) + AoP (adverb of place)

Oblačim se svaki dan u kuhinji. N
Svaki dan se oblačim u kuhinji. N

Passive Voice in Serbian

Marina Passive in Serbian ,

in The Passive Voice is not widely used in the Serbian language. That's why it doesn't have some special morphological means to express it, but uses the following:

1. Auxiliary + passive participle (-n/-t endings)
Stolica je polomljeNA. = The chair is broken.

2. Reflexive forms (impersonal structures with the impersonal pronoun 'se')
Novine se štampaju svaki dan. = Newspapers are printed every day.

3. Active forms (passive in deep structure)
Ovde piše da ... = It is written (Someone has written) that ...

Since the first structure is called 'Passive Voice' in Serbian, let's practise it!

Turn the following sentences into the Passive (I'm using only -N endings)
RULE: TO BE * + Infinitive Stem (usually) or Present Stem (prezentska osnova)** and -N suffixe
Sg. Fem. -na
Sg. Masc. -n
Sg. Neuter -no
Pl. Fem. -ne
Pl. Masc. -ni
Pl. Neuter -na

EXAMPLE:
I ate a hamburger= Ja sam pojeo hamburger.
Hamburger je pojeden.

1. Mi smo primili pismo.
2. Sonja je ispravila imeil.
3. Ja sam popila vodu.
4. Sestra je istukla brata.
5. Marko je zaprosio Anu.
