Serbian 401 - Text Comparison with Serbian Song "The Only One"
Version one
ostani, ovaj dan je bio loš
ostani, da ne budem više sam
jer je tuga sve što znam
pričaj mi, nek me umire na čas
tvoje ruke i tvoj glas
Ti si jedina od svih
koja dođe kada treba
ti si sunce moga neba tebi mogu
tebi mogu reći sve Ti si jedina od svih
koja tajne moje čuva
ti si moja ljubav prva za mnom pođeš bilo gdje Ostani, nisi ista, ali znaš
ostani, da mi opet snage daš
pričaj mi, nek me umire na čas
tvoje ruke i tvoj glas Pričaj mi, makar bajke bile to pričaj mi, ti ćeš otjerati zlo
pričaj mi, nek me umire na čas
tvoje ruke i tvoj glas Ref. Ostani, nisi ista, ali znaš
ostani, da mi opet snage daš
pričaj mi, nek me umire na čas
tvoje ruke i tvoj glas

1. My Youtube channel www.youtube.com/learnserbian has 100 videos more (there were only about 20 up to 2011, and now there are 125, with 99 being visible).
2. The initial concept of an online session which was to consist of a language exercise, recipe and a song, has been changed, according to the feedback of all the subscribers. Still, at the end of each session, we enjoy singing one of the songs which I carefully choose each week.
3. I started adding all the explanations and exercises into pdf files, and also creating fun quizzes with the instand feedback. Some of the pages based on the situational phrases can be downloaded in pdf format from www.SkolaSrpskog.com.
4. During Easter, I organized some kind of an "online language quest" and we all had fun chasing Easter eggs on the site (some of them are still hidden there :) and doing fun exercises in Serbian. Some of the participants won free SkolaSrpskog Activator subscription, some won free 1:1 lessons, and I won many new friends and great ideas for our lessons :-)
5. I started gathering anonymous feedback, and here are just a few lines:
"Everything is super"
"I appreciate the amount of work the instructor puts into the experience. The YouTube videos are helpful"
"Everithing, and my teacher is lovely and flexibile, she love teaching us"
However, all that I've done and created so far is hardly mentioning in comparison to the effort my students have put into their work. They regularly attend the lessons and I am really proud of each one of them.
Today, on Britannia bookshop site, one of my most proficient students of Serbian, Jelena from Санкт-Петербург, Russia published the first part of our interview, which was very much inspired by our SkolaSrpskog Activator lessons.
Hvala Jelena i hvala svim đacima, Jani, Fabijanu, Matiji, Lari, Mirku, Milici, Toniju, Silvini, Ljubi i Tini na ukazanom poverenju, istrajnosti i velikom trudu :) U avgustu ćemo napraviti mali raspust, i onda opet nastavljamo sa časovima u septembru.
For all of you who'd like to learn more about SkolaSrpskog Activator, do join FB SkolaSrpskog Podcast group and you will be invited to attend our Third Friday Free Serbian lessons.

Serbian Genitive Task
I'm going to write the translations of these captions. Your task is to match them with colours :)
Boje (colours) su: narandžasta (1), crvena (2), tamno plava (3), ljubičasta (4), tamno ljubičasta (5), zelena (6)
- a) My village is more beautiful than Paris (the preposition "than" in comparison always requires the Genitive case)

- c) If they are from Rome, we are from Paris!
- d) If this sun sees me, it must think I am from Paris!

For now, try to compare the animals you see in the video sticking to the following sentence structure, using only the adjective "dangerous" = opasan (comparative : Singular: opasniji (masc) - opasnija(fem) - opasnije (neut.) Plural: opasniji (masc) - opasnije (fem) - opasnija (neut) )
- For pre-intermediate level: Lav je opasniji od zebre (Gen. of "zebra")
- For intermediate and upper levels: Mislim da je lav opasniji od zebre.
Animals in the video with their Genitive form:
- zebra - od zebre
- tigar - od tigra
- ajkula - od ajkule
- orao - od orla
- medved = od medveda
- lav = od lava
- panda = od pande
- vuk = od vuka
- žirafa = od žirafe
- aligator = od aligatora
- golub = od goluba
- zmija = od zmije
- lane = od laneta

For example: Ovo je dečak. Videla sam dečaka. Slikala sam dečaka. (there's also a stress change from the first to the second syllable).
While the linguists dwell on these topics and enjoy discussing whys and ifs of such irregularities, I always enjoy helping you in the most practical way. That's why Ivan and I created these two videos, carefully choosing nouns both in singular and then in plural and grouping them. With both videos you can practice saying simple sentences, with the verbs:
- videti (to see )
- fotografisati = slikati = uslikati (to take a photo of )
- snimati (to record)
The second one is obviously all about "animate" category - this time the topic is "people " (so switch to the Genitive endings for masc. please).

While watching the video try to figure our which sentences I changed and which synonims I used. You can also try to solve which numbers 1- 5 are missing. After the careful comparison, try to do the additional exercises:
- with numbers and adjectives (in the Latin alphabet)
- with nouns (the Cyrillic script - still under construction)
