With all the question words changing according to the cases, I bet it's pretty confusing when it comes to asking WH questions in Serbian. That's why I'll share a series of posts with question words in Serbian.

The first one is going to be an easy one, with the basic questions such as:

KAD - When?
ZAŠTO - Why?
ŠTA - What?
KOJI - Which?
KO - Who?
KOLIKO DUGO - How long?
KOLIKO ČESTO - How often?
KAKO - How?
GDE - Where?
ODAKLE - Where from?

This is a fun game for real beginners in Serbian. There is a list of international words which are commonly used in the Serbian language and I made a memory game with it. Have fun playing the game and asking each other questions:

In Serbian 301 one is practicing to confidently ask and answer questions about some past tense events. This can be practiced in different ways:

talking about your past, or past events in your life
talking about your friends and family and their experiences
retelling a short story that we have previously learnt
retelling an interesting film/book plot

Additionally, you can also practice telling a story based on a suitable song. Let's take Kristing by Zdravko Čolić, for example!

Since many of my students told me how easy it is to learn Serbian by singing, I decided to introduce nice and catchy tunes with nice and easy Serbian collocations into my new Five Minute Serbian course.

At first I thought it would be a great idea to organize each course from the very beginner to the most advanced levels (from A1 to C2), but my students suggested I should divide them into two groups - from A1 to B1 and another one from B2 to C2. That will allow me to add more language related lessons for each level.

For example, A1 level now covers not only "The weather/wine is good" but also two new chapters dedicated to members of family and how to introduce them. A2 level doesn't cover only what WAS the weather like, but also who WAS at home/work etc. B1 level is covering asking "kakva vs. kakav" when asking questions such as "What was the party like?" and similar.

Let me share with you two brand new lessons:

Greetings from Genitive - Part 2

If you really had fun learning Genitive yesterday, I'm sure you'll have a blast today:

As you can see, there's a bunch of characters speaking to you in Serbian (written both in the Cyrillic and Latin alphabet :) Because they are talking about where they are right now, they are using (guess what?) the Genitive case. Now, I have a few tasks for you. Let's find out:

A. Who is saying what? = Ko šta kaže?

Sunce kaže:
Majmun kaže:
Ptica kaže:
Dečko kaže:

B. Where are = Gde su...

dečko (a boy)
devojčica (a girl)
pingvin (a penguin)
ptica (a bird)
majmun (a monkey)
sunce (the sun)
mačka (a cat)

C. One Cyrillic text is missing - which one? Write it in the comment below:

Serbian Genitive with Sg. Feminine Nouns

I hope you have mastered your Genitive with Sg. Masc. nouns. That's why we are working on the nouns which are Fem. Sg. today. Look at the examples:

Ja sam iznad zgrade! Ko sam ja? Da li sam ja ptica?
Danas sam ispred zgrade! Ko sam ja? Da li sam ja mačka?
Oni su iznad mene! Ko su oni? Ko sam ja?
On nije iznad mačke! Ja sam iznad mačke! Ko sam ja?

What happens with the following nouns?

zgrada = building
ptica = bird
mačka = cat
devojčica = girl
voda = water

when they follow the prepositions:

iznad = above or over
ispod = below or under
iz = from
pored = near or beside

By looking the examples, you can see that the final -a disappears, becoming an -e:

Iznad zgradE = above the building
Ispod pticE = under the bird
Pored mačkE = beside the cat
Iza devojčicE = behind the girl
Iznad vodE = above the water

Asking simple questions with the verb TO BE in Serbian

I am sure you have noticed two types of questions in this exercise:

Wh-? questions: Ko sam ja = Who am I and Ko su oni? Who are they?
Yes-no questions: Da li sam ja pingvin? = Am I a penguin?

With the verb to be=biti, it is obvious that there is

a wh-? question word before an inversion (ja sam becomes KO sam ja)
da li question phrase before an inversion (ja sam becomes DA LI sam ja)

Yes, it's that simple :)

Serbian Language Tests - Accusative Plural

There are so many different online tools for making tests, quizzes and fun video exercises and I think you noticed I like experimenting with them while creating various tasks for learning Serbian. Funnily enough, it takes time for some tools to develop and in the meantime, I completely forget about them. One of these is certainly Quizlet, which I joined three years ago, but haven't realized its potential until recently, thanks to my student, Paul! Hvala, Pavle :)

If you flicked through Serbian School website, you probably noticed that I started adding videos and Serbian language tests made with this tool. I even started making classes at different levels, to group the tests, so feel free to join in!

Let me see if I can share some of the tests on this blog as well! This particular exercise is a follow up of a video lesson explaining which phrases to use when shopping:

želeti = to want to
kupiti = to buy
videti = to see
želim da kupim = I want to buy
želim da vidim = I want to see

Kupiti/videti is followed by the Accusative (čaša - želim da vidim čašu), but in this exercise we practise asking general questions with the Plural noun form, in the Accusative. That's why the idea behind this exercise is for you to turn : I + want + buy + a glass into I want to buy glassES or in Serbian: JA + ŽELETI + KUPITI + ČAŠA into ŽELIM DA KUPIM ČAŠE

With this video you can not only pronounce the Simple present conjugations of the verb "zvati se", but you can also practise its word order and asking and answering simple questions in the second part of the video. Which words are missing there ?

It is really beautiful/nice (lep - lepa - lepo)

Plural = Množina:

Part two combines asking questions from part no. 1 (gde je / gde su) with answers (ona je u + ormanU (suffix '-u' for masc. nouns denotes the locative case). Take a look at the example examples:
