In this second book, Where is the Key? I continue using the most common verbs which require the accusative case. We are also practicing introducing ourselves and our friends.  There is also a task for you to find ONE hidden key. If you are having problems finding it, do let me know!

Easy to Read -  Ko je ko?

In the third book, Who is Who, we are dealing with some similar names like Jovan and Jovana or Ivan and Ivana. Since they can be a bit confusing, we are trying to figure out who is who, by following our friends in search of one another. At the end of the book there is an Activity book where you need to find the hidden page numbers... a little bit of Locative case will always prove useful in the days to come :D

The Fourth Easy to Read book 

The name of the fourth book is "What we like" and it is all about games and seasons we like. It is to be published in October. This one is the easiest of all, and I am sure you'll love it! Watch this space :D

In this part you are simply learning to explain why not all the animals are at the lion's party.

Vocabulary:

• slaviti = to celebrate
• taj lav = the lion
• rođendan = birthday
• svi = all
• životinja = animal
• sve životinje = all the animals
• žurka = party
• njegova = his
• na njegovoj žurci = at his party

Pay attention to the word PARTY - žurka:

• Ovo je super žurka = This is a great party (Nominative)
• Dolazim sa žurke = I am coming from the party (Genitive)
• Idem ka žurci = I am going to(wards) the party (Dative)
• Idem na žurku = I am going to the party (Accusative)
• Lav je zadovoljan žurkom = The lion is satisfied with the party (Instrumental)
• Lav je na žurci = The lion is at the party (Locative)

Now that you feel more confident telling a joke (ispričati vic) about an elephant and giraffe, let's do some grammar exercises for fun :)

Today we are going to practice relative pronouns in Serbian in a fun way!



Relative pronouns /question words which and who in Serbian also change according to the number and gender, so I want you here to have fun playing a memory game + use a bit more complex sentences, such as:

1. Vidim čoveka koji radi na kompjuteru.
2. Vidim čoveka koji nosi kapu. 
3. Vidim ženu koja razgovara s nekim. 
4. Vidim dete koje nosi haljinu. 

• čovek koji radi = a man who is working
• žena kojA radi = a woman who is working
• dete kojE radi = a child who is working
• ljudi koji rade = people who are working
• žene kojE rade = women who are working
• deca kojA rade = children who are working

In our fun Serbian comics we can learn where people are, or where they were in the past. Today we are using the same case, the Locative case to express where we are in a house and after that we can also say what we are doing in the house.




Instead of a comic, I recorded a video for you, so you can practice saying simple sentences:

• Ovo je HODNIK. Ovo je Marko. Marko je u hodnikU. On ne radi ništa u hodniku.
• Ovo je KUHINJA. Ovo je Marko. Marko je u kuhinjI. On pravi doručak u kuhinji.

While in the previous lesson we noticed that the Locative Singular ending was only -i, it was like that simply because we were in places which are in Feminine Singular (U Moskvi, Aziji, Evropi, Budimpešti...)

However, today we are in having fun  in places which are Masculine Singular and that's why we add the suffix -u at the end of each place:

1. Ja sam danas u Parizu. = Danas sam u Parizu.
2. ...Beograd >>> Beogradu
3. ...Lisabon >>> Lisabonu
4. ... Sidnej >>> Sidneju
5. ... Niš >>> Nišu
6. ...muzej >>> muzeju
7. ... centar >>> centru 

Where are you today?

Today we are in Moscow. Moscow is in Russia. Russia is in Europe and Asia. Where are you today? Let's say this in Serbian! Latin Script Version

Today we are practising three simple questions and three simple answers:

1. Where do you / You live? = Где живиш / живите?= Gde živiš / živite? 
2. What do you / You do? = Шта радиш / радите? (Чиме се бавиш / бавите?)  = Šta radiš / radite? (Čime se baviš / bavite?) 
3. What do you do in your free time? = Шта радиш / радите у слободно време? = Šta radiš / radite u slobodno vreme?

If you are familiar with the personal pronouns in Serbian in the Nominative case, it's time for you to their different forms through various cases.

The clever way is to approach these more complicated forms through the texts you've done before, using the pronouns instead of nouns. For example:



If we turn all the nouns into the corresponding pronouns, we would get a fun story:

• Želim da kupim njih. = Želim da ih kupim.
• Da li  imate njih, ali u plavoj boji? = Da li ih imate, ali plave?
• Da li možete da mi pokažete nju i njih = Da li možete da mi je pokažete i da mi ih pokažete?
• Želim da kupim nju, nju i nju i njih. = Želim da je kupim i želim da ih kupim.

However, the easiest way is to learn pronouns is through songs and exercises:

• Personal pronouns in the Dative with "Kafu mi draga ispeci"
• Personal pronoun "we" in different forms with "Moja draga" 
• Personal pronouns in the Accusative and possessive adjectives with "Dudo"
• Mixed personal pronouns with "Tako mi svega"

• Accusative (MENE / SEBE - TEBE/ VAS - NJEGA - NJU(JE) - NJEGA // NAS - VAS - NJIH)

• Locative ( o MENI/ SEBI - TEBI - VAMA - NJEMU - NJOJ - NJEMU // NAMA - VAMA - NJIMA)
• Instrumental (SA MNOM/SOBOM - TOBOM - VAMA - NJIM - NJOM - NJIM // NAMA - VAMA - NJIMA)

The topic of today's lesson is the verb IĆI U/NA(to go to) followed by different places. Because of the preposition U/NA, which mean in/at/on in English, students tend to make a mistake and use the Locative case of a noun instead of the Accusative. However, since IĆI U is the verb which denotes movement, we can translate it with GO TO and then it is followed by the Accusative.

So, with today's Quizlet set we will be  practicing:

• different conjugations of the verb IĆI in its imperfective form: idem (sada)  = I am going to (now). 
• prepositions U vs. NA
• Accusative Singular nouns (there is a change only with the Feminine nouns, which drop the final A and add U)

Biti in Serbian

The verb "TO BE" in Serbian is something you should learn at the very beginning, because you'll need it not to express the most essential facts about yourself, but also because it is used as an auxiliary verb in the Simple Past tense.

That's why this post dedicated to the different conjugations, i.e. forms, of the verb to be can be useful both for the beginners and more advanced students.

While watching this video say "This is a... These are ...s" using these structures:

• Ovo je ... (+ nominative Sg)

Exercise 2:

• Ovo su ...(+ nominative Pl)
